Check Where You’re Hosting Your Content From

When it comes to hosting certain types of websites you should really check up on the law first. Depending on which country your server is hosted from those are the laws you have to abide by. For example I work in the UK and have one of my servers based in Houston, Texas.

I setup a movie website as a project called myexp.co.uk and dedicated2me.com, I then created a business selling movie website scripts from a website called moviewebsitescript.com. The problem I am facing is the movies I provide my users are not stored on my server but are streamed from other peoples servers around the world. Its illegal to share video full stop but in the UK its not illegal to stream content from other servers. As my server is based in Houston there laws are slightly different, its actually illegal to stream video as well as host them, so even though I’m in the UK abiding by UK laws I am actually committing a criminal offense.

I have two options now, the first is to close the sites down completely which is not a big issue and will reduce my income some what. Or I can purchase a UK server from someone like RackSpace and move my sites over. To be honest in my case I will probably close the sites down or package them up together and sell them on flippa.com. I’m happy to close the sites down as they produce a bit to much work, I’m currently focusing on building businesses that run on autopilot and don’t require any human input.

The best type of web based business is one that runs on autopilot, that way you are not limited to how many orders you can carry out or how much time you can spend on it. By having an autopilot website you are not capping the amount of income it can produce.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

I just want to point out that you may still be able to access my movie sites, I have to wait until I’m back in the Uk to access my server. I have it locked down to a handful of ip addresses due to numerous attacks.
